Lugana Vermentino

Lugana and Vermentino are two distinct Italian white wine styles that share bright acidity and a pronounced mineral streak derived from their respective terroirs—Lugana from the glacial soils south of Lake Garda and Vermentino from coastal Mediterranean sites. Lugana is made from the Turbiana grape (often called Trebbiano di Lugana), yielding wines with delicate white peach, almond blossom, and chalky notes. Vermentino, by contrast, is a separate variety thriving in Sardinia, Corsica, and parts of Tuscany, expressing zesty citrus, green apple, saline herbs, and a subtle bitterness. Both wines showcase a lively mouthfeel and sea-spray freshness, making them excellent partners for seafood, shellfish, and light pasta dishes. While Lugana tends toward gentle stone-fruit and floral nuances, Vermentino often exhibits more pronounced herbaceous and saline characteristics, offering two complementary expressions of Italian whites.
