Vintage sparkling wines are produced from grapes harvested in a single, exceptional year, unlike non-vintage versions which blend multiple years for consistency. These wines are only made when growing conditions are ideal, allowing winemakers to showcase the unique character of that particular vintage. Typically aged longer on the lees than non-vintage sparklings, they develop deeper complexity, creamier textures, and more refined bubbles. You’ll often find rich layers of brioche, toasted nuts, citrus, stone fruit, and mineral tones in high-quality vintage bottles. Champagne houses, as well as top producers in California, Italy (like Franciacorta), and Spain (Gran Reserva Cava), all craft vintage expressions that age gracefully over time. Due to their structure and elegance, vintage sparklings are excellent for special occasions or cellaring, with many reaching their peak years after release.
