Robert Parker: 91 Points

Surprisingly enough, the 2022 El Burro Malbec Natural feels a bit closed, as Sebastian Zuccardi told me that when you work in a reductive way and don't use added sulfur, the wines tend to close down. It has a somewhat reductive personality and needed air and time in the glass. This achieved 14.7% alcohol, which also acts as a kind of preservative. It's varietal, with violets, berries and herbs, a juicy palate with fine-grained tannins and a long, dry finish. It's clean and precise and has a lively color, as adding sulfur also lowers the color, which was not the case here.

Wine & Spirits: 91 Points

Perfumed with violets and wild raspberries, this wine’s quick journey to the northern hemisphere left it with a slight tanky edge to the acidity. A bit of air settled it, becoming exuberant and energetic. Toss it on top of the ice in a picnic cooler to focus its energy.

El Burro Santa Julia is the first organic and natural wine from Bodega Santa Julia and reflects their mission to develop wines in an organic and sustainable way, coexisting with the environment instead of attacking it. It represents the maximum expression of the variety and its surroundings.

Deep red color with violet hues. Typical aromas of Malbec. Fresh fruit and a hint of plums and cherries. Great body and structure. Deep in mouth. Pleasant finish with a taste of plums jam.

Malbec

Malbec is a red wine grape originating from France but finding success in Argentina. Known for its dark, inky color, Malbec wines from Argentina are full-bodied with rich fruit flavors like blackberry and plum. They often have moderate to high tannins and pair well with grilled meats. While Argentina is the primary producer, Malbec is also grown in other regions globally. The grape struggled in the cooler Bordeaux climate but thrives in Argentina's warmer conditions, especially in the high-altitude vineyards of the Andes. The wines are generally approachable in their youth but can age well, developing complexity and softer tannins over time.
