Tasting Panel: 96 Points

Black, inky earthiness defines the nose and palate, along with a round, silky mouthfeel. Cocoa and dried violets appear against a slightly dusty backdrop, while notes of leather, black olive, and slate are soul-stirring. This vintage is GEO's most elegant to date, but its robust, statuesque character remains intact.

Wine Enthusiast: 93 Points

This is a 100% varietal wine that hails from the producer’s Mount George Vineyard in the relatively cool appellation. Woody and herbal, it offers integrated layers of blueberry, cranberry and red currant. Tangy acidity boosts the dense underbelly of tannin and oak, while the finish is awash in crushed rock.

From the gravelly hillside of this historic estate vineyard at the base of Mt. George, the source of the volcanic soils, GEO is a blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot, with small amounts of petit verdot, cabernet franc and malbec. The wine has the coolness of Coombsville fruit: a full-on sour- cherry saturation that makes the tannins feel sweet. Brisk and vibrant, it’s a wine for beef carpaccio.

Cabernet Sauvignon

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.
