Piedmont Saar Riesling Kabinett 750ml
The estate is named after Claus Piedmont's family, who likely gave or received their patronymic from a village called Piedmont back in 1846. Without any clear origin, it's an unusual moniker to be found along the Saar River, and few people know German Piedmont exists. The same goes for the Saar River, which gets lumped in with the Mosel and Ruwer, but we're sticklers for geographical exactness. The 9-acre estate in Filzen is just a short distance south of Konz, where the Saar meets the Mosel. Essentially, you get expensive-tasting Mosel flavor & quality at Saar prices. Claus and his daughter Sitta, the 5th generation winemaker, make some seriously good Riesling.
Flavor Profile: Medium-bodied, slightly off-dry. Golden in the glass with green hues and a classic nose of petrol and pear tart. The palate shows Golden Delicious apples followed by Key Limes on a flinty mineral finish. Any residual sugar appears on the fore-palate and disappears by the time you swallow. This Kabinett comes in a 14-inch blue glass bottle that might not fit in many fridges, but at 9.5% ABV, you can finish it in one sitting. Pair with spicy food, German sausages, cheeses, and potatoes with bacon.
