Single Malt Scotch

Single malt Scotch whisky is made exclusively from malted barley, distilled in copper pot stills at a single Scottish distillery, and matured for at least three years in oak casks. Its production begins with malted barley that’s mashed and fermented, then distilled twice (or sometimes three times), with peat often used during kilning to lend a smoky edge. Scotland’s key whisky regions—Speyside, Highlands, Islay, Lowlands, and Campbeltown—each yield distinct styles, from light and floral to rich and heavily peated. Flavor profiles range broadly, from the citrus and honey notes of Speyside malts to the dried fruit and spice of sherry-cask finishes, and the intense smoke, seaweed, and iodine character of Islay expressions. Iconic examples include Glenlivet 12 Year Old for its smooth pear and vanilla, Lagavulin 16 for its powerful peat and maritime smoke, and Talisker 10 for its peppery, salty bite. Best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water to unlock hidden aromas, single malt Scotch offers a versatile tasting experience that delights both newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts.
