Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Terroir is the Mendoza pioneer's flagship expression of place-driven Malbec — a transparent, vibrant red that helped redefine what Argentine Malbec could be. Founded in 1995 by famed Italian winemaker Alberto Antonini and Antonio Morescalchi, the estate champions biodynamic farming and minimal-intervention winemaking that lets the soil do the talking. Grapes come from select sites in Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley, where semi-desert days and cool Andean nights yield wines of remarkable freshness and lift. The 2020 vintage earned 90 points each from James Suckling and Wine Advocate, both praising its balance and complexity. Expect plum, blackberry, and sour cherry on the nose with a lifted thread of violet and white pepper. The palate is medium-to-full bodied with juicy fruit, ripe but vibrant tannins, and an almost creamy texture leading into a long finish. Pair with grilled steak, lamb, or hearty empanadas for a textbook Argentine pairing.
