These days, Japanese whisky is right up there with Scotch and bourbon. And to think that, just a century ago, whisky production was practically unheard of in Japan! The country’s first distillery, Yamazaki, opened in 1923. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of this pioneering distillery—and the introduction of Japanese whisky as a category—owner Suntory has released a series of limited-edition single malts. 2023 also marks the 50th anniversary of Hakushu, Suntory’s second distillery. Hakushu 12 Years Old 100th Anniversary Edition is a fresh and gently smoky single malt, aged for a minimum of 12 years in various casks. The nose offers aromas of acacia honey, ripe grapefruit, pine needle and basil. Flavours of sweet pear, green apple, kiwi and mint develop on the palate, rounded off by a finish of green tea and subtle smoke. The label features a special illustration of Hakushu in soft shades of leafy green ink, representing the forest surrounding the distillery.
