A succulent, juicy red, with huckleberry, plump blackberry and blueberry preserves that show hints of salted dark chocolate, dried violet and cardamom. Beyond the generous fruit flavors is a structure of polished tannins, with hints of palo santo, dried herbs and tobacco, adding depth and intrigue on the finish. Drink now through 2046.

The 2019 Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz blends fruit from Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale, matures in American oak (54% new, the balance second use) and delivers the kind of pleasure overload Mollydooker fans are accustomed to. Waves of chocolate, blackberry, plum and vanilla emerge from the glass, while the full-bodied palate is supple, generous and velvety in feel, and the lengthy finish adds hints of licorice. If there's any criticism, it's that the wine is rather formless and does show a bit of alcoholic warmth (it's labeled at 16% alcohol), so its ability to evolve in a positive direction is probably limited.

Description

This 2020 Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz is a fascinating wine to me, in that it offers everything that I might find challenging in one glass (high alcohol at 16%, prominent American oak and volumes of generous, abundantly concentrated, extracted fruit), yet it does so in such a way that I end up appreciating the construction and the execution despite my stylistic preferences. It's a smart wine. On the nose, there is toasted coconut (American oak fermentation and elevage), chocolate-coated raspberries, licorice bullets, lamb roast, star anise and resinous char. In the mouth, the fruit plumes over the palate and blankets the mouth in flavor. Cushioned, pillowed and very intense, the alcohol provides warmth and density through the finish. Drink it in the short to medium term to capture the vibrancy of the fruit.

Shiraz/Syrah

Shiraz/Syrah, one grape, two names, yields bold red wines. Originating in France's Rhone Valley as Syrah, it's known as Shiraz in Australia and beyond. These wines boast deep color, robust body, and intense dark fruit flavors, often accented by notes of pepper and smoke. In France, Syrah shines in structured Northern Rhone wines and blends from the Southern Rhone. Meanwhile, Australian Shiraz is celebrated for its ripe fruit and full-bodied style. Regardless of origin, Shiraz/Syrah offers versatility, from elegant and peppery to rich and opulent, reflecting its terroir and winemaking.
